Ring Puzzle

A quickie this time (although it may take some time to think about)! The story is:

Dixie has broken Trixie's nice loop necklace into 5 parts, each with 4 links. When he brings it to the jewellery repair shop, he is told that it will cost $1 to break a link, connect it and remake the link. What is the least amount of money that it will cost to fix the necklace? Hint: the necklace when fixed has no breaks or clasps.
